Pool safety
Under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible person.
1. Ready for exercise
- Take advice from your doctor if you have heart trouble or other medical conditions such as Epilepsy, Diabetes or Asthma and notify staff if you suffer from any of these conditions
- Don't swim straight after a meal or if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- For extra safety swim with a companion
- Only swim within your limits
- Weak or non-swimmers must remain within their standing depth of water
2. Follow the rules
- Look out for safety notices around the pool areas
- Always follow the Lifeguards instructions
3. Pool awareness
Be aware of the pool environment, for example:-
- Check water depths and how the pool slopes. Customers should note that water depths will vary in the Teaching Pool due to the provision of a moveable pool floor and should therefore always check the water depths
- Pool surrounds can become slippery - don't run on them
4. Be sensible
- Boisterous behaviour, ducking and bombing can be dangerous
- Avoid holding your breath
- Don't attempt long distances under the water
- Always avoid shouting as it can distract others in an emergency

6. Play equipment and water features
- During certain periods, inflatable play equipment and water features are present in the pool. When using this equipment be sensible, safe and follow instructions given by Lifeguards
- Snorkels, Face-Masks and Flippers are not permitted during public sessions
7. Bubble pools
- Children under 8 years must be under adult supervision when using the Bubble Pools
8. Diving and jumping in the pools during public sessions
Diving
- No diving in the Hebburn Central Teaching Pool
- No diving in the Haven Point Leisure Pool or Teaching Pool
- Diving is permitted in the Main Pool into water depths of 1.5m and above. Customers should note that water depths will vary in the Haven Point Main Pool due to a moveable pool floor and should therefore always check the water depths
- No diving from the raised poolside section of the Main Pool (Haven Point)
Jumping (feet first entries)
- Jumping into the Main Pool and Teaching Pool is permitted where the water depth is 1.0m and above
- No jumping into the Leisure Pool
- No jumping from the raised section of the poolside at the shallow end of the Main Pool
- No running jumps
9. Swimwear
- Only appropriate swimwear is permitted
- In exceptional circumstances, items of clothing may be permitted at the discretion and approval of the pool management
10. Hygiene
- Use the toilet and have a shower before entering the pool
- Outdoor footwear must be removed or shoe covers worn in changing areas and on the poolside
11. Help the Lifeguards
- Always be aware of others in the pool and watch for children and non-swimmers
- Attract the attention of Lifeguards if you think someone is in difficulty and assist whenever possible by remaining calm and following instructions given to you
Learn to swim crash courses
We're running swimming crash courses during the Spring half term holidays at Haven Point and Hebburn Central.
They will take place from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 May.
Stages and what children will learn
- Preschool - Suitable for children aged 3 to 4, still not in full time eduction
Introduction to water for children without their parents. Basic skills taught through play using buoyancy aids. An ideal step to increase water confidence and familiarise the swimmer with essential skills before progressing to stage1. - Stage 1 - Suitable for children aged 4 and over, who are in full time education
Developing basic safety awareness, the class scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, e.g. arm bands, floats, etc. - Stage 2 - Suitable for children aged 5 and over
Entry to and exit from water, water awareness and safety, develop basic kicking and pulling movements, swim without artificial aids, introduction to basic water skills and games.
Cost
The courses cost 拢25.60 per child for the 4 days.

- Preschool (children aged 3 to 4) - 9.30am to 10am (Course reference: HCS1SH1)
How to register
To register please call into Haven Point or Hebburn Central and complete the following:
- Register your child for a Get Active Discount Card Membership (FREE) - only if not currently on the Learn to Swim Programme.
- Complete a course enrolment form in full, please make sure you include a current contact telephone number and email address.
- Quote the course reference which will indicate what course and time you want to register for.
- Make the course payment in full.
Please note that there are limited places available, and they are open on a first come first serve basis
